"Covered in blood, a knife in one hand and a gun in the other. This rescue attempt has gone terribly wrong."
I was finally getting used to life among the am’r (the name vampires use for themselves) in Romania, archiving a library of ancient texts, learning how to fight, and having lots of quality time with Sandu—who used to go by the name Dracula—perhaps you’ve heard of him?
But then the dreams started. Bagamil, the maker of Sandu (and, ahem, also my lover—life has gotten a lot more exciting recently), was supposed to be on a mission to the am’r of South America, but he has been missing for months now, and those nightmares tell me that something is terribly wrong.
So Sandu made rescue plans, and I insisted on coming along to help. But now I’ve been separated from all the am’r who are our allies, and I’m trapped in a booby-trapped cave system down at the bottom of the world, chased by enemy vampires with knives and guns—not fair!
And I have two problems even on top of that! First, I’m now part-am’r, which makes me smell even more delicious to them, and secondly, well, there seems to be even more bad guys than expected down here, and they all seem to be holding some deep grudges against both Sandu and Bagamil. And they want revenge right now.
How can I find my beloveds without falling into a trap or being taken captive by the hangry bad guys? Once we’re all together again, how do we figure some way out of all of this? If I’ve learned anything in my time amongst the am’r, it’s only going to be by fighting our way out...
Blood Sine Qua Non is the second book in a brand new, dark urban fantasy series mixing horror, history, and blood-soaked romance featuring a snarky librarian heroine and a sensual but complex hero in the story of an adventure like no other, with thrilling plot-twists and characters faced with "personal growth or death." Ranging from Romania through gorgeous settings in Buenos Aires and Tierra del Fuego, get caught up in the clashes of personality and chaotic melees, fight for love with guns, knives, and the ultimate weapon against vampires: fire.
I started this book knowing nothing more than that Bagamil was going to get abducted, and that we’d all have a nice trip to South America. The characters completely took this one over, and I just typed in fascination as they did their thing. (At some point, I realized that we might as well have the Benny Hill theme playing, as everything that could go wrong for the characters did go wrong, and we were all just running around not knowing what the hell we were doing. But all’s well that ends well, and my characters and I are still talking to each other; that’s what matters!)
Yet again, this book goes out into a world rocked by pandemic, and now actively shaken by deep tensions rising to the surface where they can no longer be ignored. Yet again, my book is not useful thing—not an educational piece on the history of viruses nor an exploration of racial injustice—but I hope that what it can be in this time (and onwards into the future, as well) is a little bit of rest for overtaxed brains, looking for a distraction and period of relaxation. If I can help people recharge before going back out into the world to tackle the profound and serious problems we are confronting, then it would be a worthy thing to have done.

"I can smell explosives and fire. I am covered in blood, and I’d love to say it’s mostly the blood of my enemies, but actually I think it’s half-and-half at best."
Anushka "Noosh" Rossetti is an overqualified and bored small-town librarian until the day a dark, handsome, and mysterious stranger shows up at the children’s reading hour. She is amazed that he shows an interest in her, but quickly falls for the man who introduces himself as Alexandru Solin. After he disappears out of her life she thinks she is doomed to return to monotony—until suddenly he returns, announces that he is a vampire, and says he needs her: he will explain all if she just goes back to his place with him. By choosing to go with him, Noosh makes the first of serious of dubious choices, although they seem right (or at least fun!) along the way. A weekend of amazing vampiric sex and equally amazing revelations about the world of the am’r (as the vampires call themselves) ends in Noosh "going for" an irreversible decision: to share blood with Alexandru ("Sandu") a third time, tying herself to him.
Sandu yanks Noosh out of her boring old world—and indeed, out of the human world entirely, as he takes her (literally) underground to a meeting of am’r—there is a huge crisis in the am’r world and Sandu says Noosh’s skills as archivist and information scientist make her valuable to them. Noosh begins to explore her vibrant and intense new reality, but just as she discovers that Sandu has not told her the whole truth, she is kidnapped by Mehmet, Sandu’s rival and oldest enemy. Mehmet turns out to be terrifyingly insane and yet a powerful leader of a new movement—and Mehmet wants Noosh for his own purposes. Noosh finds herself changing as she is forced to keep up with the spiraling consequences of her choices: she must confront the violence and inhumanity of the world she has chosen, learning the rules of a whole new kind of life quickly enough to survive without her lover or friends. Just when Noosh thinks she has lost everything, she gets the opportunity to finally get personal revenge and to help Sandu achieve victory over his oldest foe. Amid the explosions, fire, and bloodshed, Noosh finally starts to find a place for her new self in the world of the am’r, in a life she never expected but in which she can truly thrive.
One of the sex scenes in this book I dreamed one night, with a lot of the backstory just appearing in my head like I’d always known it. When I woke up in the morning, I rushed to write it all down. When I finished, I thought, I want to keep going with this; I want to know what happens to this character. I’d written lots of short stories, but never actually completed a novel. So I pressed on, and it took a long time, but finally I had finished my first novel. But during the writing of the novel, it became very clear that it was going to have to be a trilogy, that Noosh’s story couldn’t be told in just one book.
I started writing this book just for me. And it was a great escape and distraction during some very hard periods of my life. Now I realize how much I want it to be a satisfying escape for everyone else. I hope that people are distracted from their own hard times when they pick it up. I hope they love the journey in reading it as much as I have in writing it.
